There was a time, maybe from the 1950s
to as late as the '70s, when handy folk dolled up their garage doors
with a variety of geometric patterns. My guess is it started with
seeking a use for interior wood trim stubs, but a quick search of the
collective
memory reveals that the effect was eventually buyable
right out of the box--or better yet installed. I've been photographing
them in Seattle for years but Chicago,
being
more
intact
and continuous in general, exhibits many
more
and
finer
examples. People here also take greater pride in their Halloween
decorations. Even the fire
hydrants look better.
