the earthquake was scary. hard to describe what it's like when out
of nowhere all the apparent solidity of the world drops away and everything
shakes, sways, and undulates like it's made of rubber.
we came through it ok.

maybe i said something wrong...?!
2 things: my friend told me the hurricane was intense! hope you are ok. he
is staying with his show until sunday, let me know if you fell like seeing
it.
tchau,
fernanda.
[note: i met fernanda at jones beach in 1996. she's from brazil, which
accounts for the "hurricane" freudian slip, i guess. her email last week
was the first i'd heard from her in 3 years. her friend is in seattle acting
in a civil war play.]

oh man, did i ever. primal terror. the whole house felt like rubber,
shit falling off shelves and walls, screams of children and emergency
announcements from grade school across the street, swaying telephone poles
and quivering streets underfeet. adrenalin rush, for sure. 30 seconds never
felt so long. it comes without warning and there's just no telling when it
will end or if it's going to continue worsening and even now there's that
lingering concern that it could start up again (though i just read that deep
quakes, which this was, don't aftershock as much).
i ran outside and kept an eye on rainier, wondering if this would trigger
an eruption. who knows, it could already be set in motion, though the effect
might not be felt for another 50,000 years.
all in all, pretty fucking cool. afterwards, sarah and i sat by the canal
eating cheese sandwiches and feeding fritos to ducks.

there's a school across the street. other than the sound of stuff
falling off the walls, the announcements over the PA to get the kids out
was the scariest part. of course, once outside they shrieked with glee and
ran around the playground happy for the brief respite from classroom tedium.
there's been a good series about homeschooling on npr this week.

sarah's in her studio today, which is even scarier b/c that thing
is so rickety. i hear some sirens. hopefully she is not clawing her way out
of the rubble. lulu didn't like the shaking, either. it disturbed her
nap.
at first i thought daniel was applying some supergrinder to our walls.
outside, the ground was throbbing and twitching. my heart was pounding. what
a weird feeling. i was watching Tahoma to see if it'd blow... our neighbor
timed it at 30 seconds. i'm bracing for aftershocks...

just heard the latest info is that it was a 6.1 centered in south
Seattle. I've never been in an earthquake longer than a second or two. I
loved it.
But then I didn't think for a second that any buildings would fall
down. A lot of people here were freaked out, especially about finding out
their kids were ok. Did you talk to Sarah yet? She was close to the
center.
