one of the first
signs you're really grown up is to get jaded about
birthdays. you pass on cake and insist "no gifts" if
you even acknowledge the day. i've been sufficiently
blasé about them for
decades, but somehow today felt special. it
was, to start, a dreamlike morning. the fog was
thick, cast a spell slow to lift, sun warm but shy
behind it, powerful but hidden, a child's idea of
the Spirit. i walked to the park, slack tide
creeping up, sere meadow of wildflowers and weeds
spotted with spiderwebs like
sails dotting the water at a regatta. they
looked so cliché, like cheap halloween decorations,
and for a split second i
got the feeling they were fake. but they were
real as all that is fleeting, strong as steel, fragile as memory,
beaded
with dew, bellied
out by a breeze, catching squat and not a
spider in sight, empty as purses turned inside out.
sunbeams pierced the veil, projected a
low rainbow from which the spectrum had been bled.
is it true people used to dream only in black and white?
not these days. it's living color 24/7, asleep or
awake, unless you opt for a filter, remember
it this way...
