when laura asked me to dj old
school style with my dusty tube amp gramophone
at her tearjerker
2 event, i didn't know what to expect, which
made sense because it was loosely structured to
begin with. after spinning sentimental 45s by
candlelight for 5 hours, i'm still not sure how to
define it, only know there were iron-on garments
being designed on the fly, a group toning circle
with abstract singalong, and a spellbinding
sidewalk poetry shout where Love Me Tender
was invoked ironically. i'm content to play
background music, the subliminal pulse of a
party, but it's nice when someone notices why
a particular track has been chosen, as laura did
when she heard Elvis warbling in the corner.
that was just one of innumerable connections
made tonight, whether performed, tete a tete,
or even just in conversation with oneself--a
constellation of sparks to light up the longest
night of the year.
