bill asked me to help him
split logs, so i put some fresh
picked tomatoes in a sack and
walked up to his place, where barney greeted
me with his usual assault bark and cannonball
charge. we set the splitter up, ran out of
gas, and
since the battery in his grocery getter was
dead, we
postponed (tho i offered to fetch a can from
home)... |
...but he did still need a hand moving this
terminal
slab, final remnant of a run of 18-foot 1x6s,
which
he pulled and stacked all by himself, a
formidable
feat at any age. he asked me to steady the
ladder
and, climbing to the cab, grumbled how he used
to
pride himself on being completely self-reliant.
time comes for us all, i replied
unhelpfully. as
i hooked the strap on the shackle, i
thought about
all the dangerous jobs in the world and the
people
who face them on a daily basis. then i put
my trust
in bill's sure hands as he swung the bucket around...
