<< We rolled dough and baked various breads
in an outdoor brick-fired oven; picked carrots,
beans, tomatoes, and flowers; visited with
goats and cattle; and feasted in the shade of
old trees.
It made me sad to watch the women
from Baghdad slapping and shaping their dough.
How strange that the country which destroyed
their home is the place they sought refuge. As
a child of refugees, I can relate to the tension
between gratitude for safety and longing for the
old country. At the end of the day everyone was
asked to speak a piece. "I think this program is
great--it strengthens links to the past while making
connections to new people and places," I said in
a voice made strange from choking back tears.
