The Clouds That Touch Us Out of Clear Skies: Stories Surrounding Miscarriage - a film by Lynn Shelton

WINNER
Judge's Award for
BEST DOCUMENTARY
Northwest Film Festival, 2000

The images are really beautiful, and work with the words in a way that really works. The film does a rare thing takes a subject that's inherently upsetting, and makes it compelling.

A powerfully absorbing documentary that uses very touching personal stories and poetic imagery to unearth the virtually inexpressible topic of miscarriage.

Imagery of a frog blends with a poetic narration to create a mood of ethereal abandon perfectly suited for the subject matter. Never maudlin, the documentary feels as close as the inside of your eyes--which is very nice.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

Lynn Shelton has been making films and videos since 1994 while she working on an MFA in Photography and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work has been seen at numerous festivals and venues, including the New York Shorts International Film Festival, Women in the Director¹s Chair, the Seattle International Film Festival, the Northwest Film Forum and 911 Media Arts. She has most recently been working as a filmmaker in collaboration with other artists such as the dance theater troupe 33 fainting spells, choreographer Karn Junkinsmith and cellist Lori Goldston.

This is a film of few words but a startling eloquence. Shelton has found visual images, backed by a haunting cello score, for bewildered pain and loss, and for relinquishment.

Women who have miscarried are truly disenfranchised mourners. Lynn's film offers these women an opportunity to feel understood...This is a work of artistic merit and great psychological value.
