Apples and pears I picked last week
with Great Aunt Vera at Hradistko
ripen outside my window.  
The leaves are turning, the light is kind,
pollution settles out of the crisp air.  
Building across the courtyard is black with years
of soot, growing darker the lower you go,
washed down by acid rain.  This is where I live.
